![]() When he released his fourth album for 2020 (he’s released five so far, what even) last month, he did a Youtube live to explain how he produced it and this quote caught my attention: ![]() ![]() And I think this builds up respect in the eyes of his friends and staff. ![]() Idk if this is uncommon with musicians, but I liked how he was setting an example – sorta like servant leadership. It’s not like: “You guys load up the stage and do this, and I’m gonna be hanging out, you know, whatever, because it’s my show, so I’m gonna relax.” It’s like: no, I’m up there – leading from the thing, setting up, “Okay if everybody’s bringing in the gear, I’ll start unpacking onstage, I’ll start placing everything in place get the drums roughly in the area keys over here…” I’m right in there in the trenches. He wouldn’t see that sort of thing even with 20,000-seater concerts. Though a lot was about the technical side of being a musician of which I’m clueless, I still learned from it – like about touring, the specific sound a certain brand of guitar or pedal makes, and team dynamics.ĭuring one of the interviews that was in a podcast, besides saying Cory was the most positive guy he knew, the host remarked how he saw Cory’s backstage set-up and how organized he was with managing everyone (I’m getting Chinese vibes now HAHAHAHA). I also read some (ok, a lot) of his interviews, which I often do for my fave musicians/shows/movies. I initially liked best the songs with lyrics (I instantly liked ‘Today I’m Gonna Get Myself a Real Job’ because of its satire and hopefulness, plus, he sang it himself) or with an occasional motivational speech (‘Companion Pass’), which I found funny and inspiring. Because I already thought he was cool, it was just a mission to listen to his stuff and understand what he was all about. …and when I watched Vulfpeck’s live concert at Madison Square Garden, he was the only member I knew (if you know Vulfpeck, their fanbase can make you feel like an outsider because of all the inside info about their song lyrics/music nerd stuff/references to different niches, but they’re just so cool that you want to feel accepted and be counted as one of them haha), so when I recognized him, I was like, “THAT’S MY BOY!!” HAHAHAHA.īut I only really became a fan when I finished listening to Vulfpeck’s whole discography (mostly done while washing the dishes over several days) and found his music when I was looking for something to listen to next. I also found a poster of his that I really liked: HAHAHA (It’s like Jacob Collier being 1/4 Chinese, but more on that in the future).” Truth be told, I was disappointed because my earlier impression about being represented was gone, but then, like I previously wrote, “He does have Asian features still, plus the heritage and the name, so he’s still Asian to me, even if it was less Asian than I had imagined him to be. ![]() Then, one day my curiosity prompted me to find out what he actually looked like (honestly in my mind he was this chinky-eyed Chinese dude with long hair and something close to my skin color – stereotypes □), and I found out he actually looks more white to my Asian eyes (wow haha). a more detailed account of how i became a fanĪs I also mentioned in my other blog, I was happy that Vulfpeck’s mostly-white band had an Asian among them (y’know, the joy of representation). In the process, he inspired me as an artist and I put that inspiration to work in some creative projects which I’ll share at the end of this post. On the other hand, I got into Vulfpeck because of their awesome vibe, quirky songs, and millennial aesthetic, and as for Cory Wong… well, it was because of his name! □Growing up in the Philippines with a lot of Chinese-Filipinos who’d sometimes have the last name Wong, I immediately identified Cory as an Asian like me, which was cool, and that led me to look him up and listen to his music. I first heard about Cory last year through Vulfpeck, a funk band he plays guitar for, and it seems like they both attract fans who are music nerds or aficionados (I don’t consider myself good enough to be either of them… yet). ![]()
